How is “organic” food different from “safe” food?

“Safe Food” is a new label introduced by the Thai Government. It is based on standards that have been agreed by both The Ministry of Public Health and The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. The standards for “safe food” are not as strict as for “organic food”; farmers are allowed to use chemical fertilizers and pesticides, but tests are carried out to make sure that residues do not exceed the “maximum residue level”. Certificates are issued to the farmers and food suppliers whose products pass these tests.
